Using flexible adhesive tape to treat a patient at Stamford Spine.

What is “taping”? Who do we use it on? Flexible adhesive tape or kinesiology tape (KT) is a wonderful tool for chiropractors. The therapeutic technique is safe and gentle. We apply tape to the skin to reduce pain in muscles and joints.

At Stamford Spine, we commonly use it to treat back pain, neck pain and shoulder pain. But, we can use KT taping on most joints throughout the body for pain related issues. These include ailments like Golfer’s Elbow and Achilles Tendinitis.

What does “Taping” treat?

How does KT tape help these problems? When the tape is applied correctly, the leading theory is that your body feels the tape more and the pain less. So, it reduces pressure on the skin in the area that is in pain. It distracts the sensory nerves so that they focus on the tape instead of the pain.

Who benefits from “Taping”?

Best of all, KT taping can be used to treat anyone’s pain. We often think about athletes getting taped. But, you do not have to be an athlete to get taped. In fact, Dr. Murphy uses it all the time on “weekend warriors” and professionals who are stuck at their desks for a lot of the day. We use a water resistant tape so that you can swim and shower with it on. Patients can wear most tape to bed and for up to three days.
